Uganda Safari from the USA: A Complete Guide to Planning Your Trip

Uganda Safari from the USA: A Complete Guide to Planning Your Trip

If you are planning your first safari in Africa, Uganda may not be the first destination that comes to mind. Kenya and Tanzania are often the countries people think of first, while Uganda is still something of a hidden gem.

But for travellers coming from the United States, Uganda can be an incredible choice.

Imagine spending a morning walking through the rainforest in search of mountain gorillas, then a few days later watching elephants and lions on the savannah. You can track chimpanzees in Kibale Forest, take a boat along the Kazinga Channel, see the Nile rushing through Murchison Falls, and experience the warmth of Ugandan communities along the way.

That combination is what makes Uganda special.

If you are considering travelling from the USA to Uganda, you probably have plenty of questions. How much will the safari cost? How do you get to Uganda? When is the best time to visit? How long should you stay? And, of course, what is it actually like to go gorilla trekking?

This guide will help you understand what to expect and how to start planning your trip.

Why Choose Uganda for Your African Safari?

One of the things we love about Uganda is that you don’t have to choose between a traditional wildlife safari and a primate adventure.

You can have both.

Uganda is home to mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, lions, elephants, hippos, buffaloes and hundreds of bird species. The country also has incredible scenery, from tropical forests and crater lakes to open savannah and dramatic mountains.

For an American traveller who may have travelled a long way to reach Africa, this variety can make a big difference.

You can spend part of your trip in the forest and another part on the savannah without having to leave the country.

And because many Uganda safaris are privately arranged, your trip does not have to look like someone else’s. We can build an itinerary around the things you actually want to see and do.

How Do You Get to Uganda from the USA?

Your international journey will normally end at Entebbe International Airport, just outside Kampala.

There are generally no direct flights from the United States to Uganda, so you will usually travel with a connection through an international hub. The exact route depends on where you are flying from in the US and which airline you choose.

We recommend looking at your international flights before finalizing your safari dates, particularly if you have a fixed number of vacation days.

Once you arrive in Entebbe, the experience becomes much easier.

Your safari company can arrange your airport pickup, accommodation and transportation, so you don’t have to figure out how to get around Uganda on your own after a long international journey.

At Magic African Safaris, we can arrange the logistics from the moment you arrive until the day you return to the airport.

How Much Does a Uganda Safari from the USA Cost?

This is probably one of the first questions we receive from travellers.

The honest answer is that there isn’t one price for a Uganda safari.

Two travellers can visit Uganda for the same number of days and have completely different safari costs depending on where they stay, what they want to do and whether they travel privately.

The main things that affect the price are your accommodation, the number of people travelling, the length of the safari, transportation, activities and the national parks you visit.

If you include gorilla trekking, the gorilla permit is another important part of the cost. The current standard gorilla trekking permit for international visitors is US$800 per person.

For that reason, we prefer to prepare a quotation based on your actual plans rather than give you a price that may not apply to your trip.

Your international flights from the USA are also normally separate from the safari cost.

What is normally included in a safari?

Depending on the itinerary you choose, your package can include accommodation, meals, a private safari vehicle, a professional driver-guide, park fees, game drives, boat trips and permits for activities such as gorilla or chimpanzee trekking.

Before you pay a deposit, your safari company should give you a clear breakdown of what is included and what is not.

Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

For many people travelling from the USA, seeing mountain gorillas is the reason they choose Uganda in the first place.

And it is easy to understand why.

Gorilla trekking takes place mainly in southwestern Uganda, particularly in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

You start your trek with a ranger guide and walk into the forest looking for a habituated gorilla family. Nobody can tell you exactly how long the trek will take. Sometimes the gorillas are relatively close; other times you may spend several hours walking through the forest.

That uncertainty is part of the adventure.

Then suddenly your guide may stop and point into the vegetation.

You look through the trees and realize that a family of mountain gorillas is sitting only a short distance away.

You might see a huge silverback, young gorillas playing in the vegetation or a mother caring for her baby.

It is a quiet and incredibly personal wildlife experience, and for many of our travellers, it becomes the highlight of their entire African trip.

Because permits are limited, we recommend arranging your gorilla trek well in advance if you already know your travel dates.

How Long Should You Spend in Uganda?

There is no perfect number of days. It really depends on what you want from the trip.

If you are short on time and gorillas are your main priority, a three-day gorilla trekking safari can work.

If you have around a week, you can start combining different experiences.

For example, you could visit Kibale Forest for chimpanzee trekking, continue to Queen Elizabeth National Park for wildlife and then finish your trip in Bwindi for gorilla trekking.

With around 10 days, you can slow things down and see more of Uganda.

A route including Murchison Falls, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi can give you a wonderful mix of wildlife, primates and landscapes.

If you have two weeks or more, there is even more flexibility. You could travel further north to Kidepo Valley or combine Uganda with Rwanda or Kenya.

Where Should You Go on a Uganda Safari?

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi is famous around the world for its mountain gorillas.

It is a beautiful, ancient rainforest, and trekking here is very different from a typical game drive. You are on foot, surrounded by thick forest and guided by people who know the area extremely well.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth is a great place to combine wildlife viewing with a relaxing boat experience.

Game drives can give you opportunities to see elephants, buffaloes, lions and many species of antelope, while the Kazinga Channel is famous for its concentration of hippos and other wildlife.

The Ishasha area in the southern part of the park is also known for its tree-climbing lions.

Kibale Forest National Park

If chimpanzees are on your wish list, Kibale deserves a place on your itinerary.

The forest is one of Uganda’s best-known primate destinations, and chimpanzee trekking gives you a completely different experience from a traditional savannah game drive.

Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls is where the Nile forces its way through a narrow gorge before continuing toward Lake Albert.

The combination of the river, the falls and the surrounding wildlife makes this one of Uganda’s most memorable destinations.

Kidepo Valley National Park

If you want to get away from the more commonly visited safari routes, Kidepo is worth considering.

It is remote, wild and incredibly scenic. Because fewer travellers make the journey here, the experience can feel much more private.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Uganda?

One of the nice things about planning a Uganda safari is that you can travel throughout the year.

The drier periods are generally around June to August and December to February, while the wetter periods tend to occur around March to May and September to November.

That doesn’t mean you should completely avoid the rainy seasons.

Uganda’s forests are at their most lush and green when there is plenty of rainfall, and wildlife viewing is still possible.

For gorilla trekking, many travellers prefer the drier months because the trails can be easier to walk. But since Bwindi is a rainforest, rain is always possible.

The best time for your trip therefore depends on your priorities, available vacation time and budget.

Is Uganda Safe for American Travellers?

Uganda receives visitors from many different parts of the world, including the United States.

As with any international trip, you should check the latest official travel advice before leaving the US and make sure you understand the current entry and travel requirements.

We also recommend travelling with an established local safari company rather than trying to organize every part of your trip after you arrive.

Having a local team means that if plans need to change because of weather, road conditions or other unexpected circumstances, you have someone on the ground to help.

What Should You Pack?

You don’t need to completely change your wardrobe for a Uganda safari.

Comfortable and practical clothing is the most important thing.

Bring lightweight clothes for the warmer days, something warmer for early mornings, comfortable walking shoes and a good pair of hiking boots if you are trekking gorillas.

A light rain jacket is also useful, particularly because weather can change quickly in the forest.

Other useful items include sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, sunglasses, a reusable water bottle, binoculars and your camera.

If you are coming specifically for gorilla trekking, we can also advise you on what to bring based on the trekking sector and time of year.

Can You Combine Uganda With Kenya or Rwanda?

Yes, and this can be a great option if you are travelling all the way from the United States and have enough time.

For example, you could begin with gorilla trekking in Uganda and then continue to Kenya for a classic Maasai Mara safari.

Another option is to combine Uganda and Rwanda, especially if you are interested in gorillas, chimpanzees and the beautiful landscapes around Lake Kivu and Volcanoes National Park.

A tailor-made East African safari gives you the freedom to combine destinations rather than limiting yourself to one country.

Why Plan Your Safari With Magic African Safaris?

Planning a safari from the USA can feel complicated when you are thousands of miles away.

There are permits to arrange, accommodation to choose, routes to plan and transport to organize.

This is where working with a local safari company can make things easier.

At Magic African Safaris, we are based in Uganda and specialize in creating private and tailor-made safari experiences across Uganda and East Africa.

We don’t believe every traveller should be given the same itinerary.

Some people want gorillas.

Others want wildlife.

Some want luxury lodges, while others would rather spend more of their budget on experiences.

When you contact us, we take the time to understand what you are looking for and then build the safari around you.
